74ALS00AN NAND gate Implementation & Simulation

 Here it is shown how to build and test 74ALS00AN NAND gate on a breadboard and how to simulate an NAND logic gate in Proteus. A NAND gate is a AND logic gate complement. That is it a equivalent to NOT gate followed by AND gate. A NAND gate can implement any boolean function and hence it is also called universal gate. AND, OR and NOT logic gate are primitive logic gates which can be build using diode and transistors. In the earlier tutorial logic gates with transistors and logic gates with diodes we showed how transistors and diodes are used to build various digital logic gates. The tutorial 74S02 two input NOR gate shows how one can build and test NOR logic gate on breadboard. Here it is shown how to build and test NAND logic gate on breadboard.

Hardware and Circuit Diagram

The following picture shows implementation of  74ALS00AN NAND gate with two push button inputs and a LED output on a breadboard.

The following shows the 74ALS00AN NAND logic gate circuit diagram with the two push button inputs and the LED output.

In the above circuit diagram the two inputs to the NAND logic gate are pulled up high using 0KOhm pull up resistors. The other side of the push buttons are grounded.

The 74ALS00AN is a quad two input NAND gate IC(Integrated Circuit). That is it has four independent 2-inputs NAND logic gate. The following shows a picture of 74ALS00AN NAND logic gate IC.

Here we will be using the first NAND logic gate with the inputs 1A and 1B and the output 1Y. The truth table of 74ALS00AN NAND logic gate is as follows.

So for NAND gate, the output is HIGH for all cases except when both the inputs are HIGH.

As can be seen in the simulation video, except when both the inputs are HIGH, the output is LOW for all cases.
